FAQ -
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What are we?
We are a full-service watersports facility located in an ocean
resort area in the mid-Atlantic of the United States.
What do we do?
As you can see we have several activities going on in Nags
Head. The bumper boats and climbing wall are located on our
site while the waverunners, sailing, windsurfing, and kayaking
are all done adjacently on the Roanoke Sound. In addition, we
have a site in Duck which only rents waverunners and motorboats.
What can an employee expect on a typical workday?
Staffers typically work 4 to 4 ½ days per week.
We spend the first hour, starting at 8:00 a.m., cleaning,
servicing, rigging and warming-up the vessels. As the customers
come in beginning at 9:00 staff members are kept busy by getting
the boats for the customers, giving an orientation of the boat
to the customer, informing them of any rules, and explaining how
to bring the vessel back safely. Employees are also needed to
maintain and make repairs on the vessels, patrol the waverunner
area, and fuel the vessels. As the day ends (we close at 6:00)
we de-rig the sailboats, store the windsurfers and kayaks, and
secure the waverunners for the night.
Bumper boat attendants get the customers on and off the boats which
are ridden in a pool. Climbing wall attendants help the
customers get in their harnesses, make sure they are clipped on
to the belay properly and provide any other assistance. The
bumper boats and climbing wall stay open until 10:00 p.m.
When things are slow we stay busy by maintaining the boats and the
property. It’s not hard physical labor but it is physical.
Staffers usually work the same four days all summer with an hour
off for lunch. Working four days per week means you will usually
come in just under 40 hours. A staffer who wants to work a
fifth day needs to be an exceptional worker. If they need a
different day off from their normal schedule then they typically
trade with a fellow employee.
Remember, we are a weather dependant business. There will be times
when we have to shut down and send people home. This may affect
your cash flow. I will try my hardest to meet your needs.
What is required to work at Kitty Hawk
Water Sports?
Employees must be:
-
A morning
person, ready to go after you punch in.
-
Friendly
and helpful communicating with customers.
-
Ready to
work outdoors in the sun and water.
-
Willing
to do physical labor.
We are not a smoker friendly place of employment.
Housing
One of the more difficult hurdles to overcome is your summer
housing. The Outer Banks does not have tons of summer-long
rentals and trying to get a lease for less than four months is
next to impossible.
We do house some staff in a group
house. First come, first serve. This is optional and you are always encouraged to find
your own.
